About the role | Mō te tūranga mahi

As a Data Engineering Manager, you'll play a key role in building ACC's data engineering capability and creating the environment for our teams to deliver high-quality outcomes for the organisation and the people we serve.

You will lead and develop a team of data engineering professionals, providing clear direction, building capability, and ensuring we have the right skills and capacity to meet both current and future needs. You'll work closely with the Head of Data, technology leaders, business stakeholders and delivery teams to translate strategy into clear priorities and connect engineering work to meaningful business outcomes.

This is a varied leadership role where you'll combine strong data engineering domain expertise with genuine people leadership. You'll champion Agile and DevOps ways of working, encourage continuous improvement, remove barriers to delivery, and empower teams to own how they solve problems. You'll also contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, succession planning and the development of future leaders and specialists.

You'll join a collaborative environment that values curiosity, learning, ownership and new ways of working, while helping ACC make better use of data and technology to deliver better outcomes for New Zealanders.

The appointing salary for this role is $164,705 to $213,148 based on experience. ACC offers a comprehensive benefits package which at present includes an advantageous superannuation scheme (9% contribution) with features like no mandatory employee contribution, optional life and income protection insurance.

About you | Mōu

You’ll ideally have:

• Strong experience across data engineering, data platforms and modern cloud/data technologies.
• Proven experience leading and developing Data Engineering or closely related technical teams.
• A strong understanding of engineering practices including Agile, DevOps/DataOps, automation, reliability and continuous improvement.
• Experience translating business and organisational strategy into clear priorities for technical teams.
• Strong stakeholder and communication skills, with the ability to work comfortably across technical and business environments.
• A genuine people-leadership mindset — someone who develops capability, creates clarity and enables teams rather than directing every technical decision.
• The ability to balance immediate delivery needs with longer-term capability, platform health and strategic priorities.
• Experience in government, public sector, insurance, health, financial services or another regulated environment would be advantageous.
• You must hold New Zealand work rights at the time of application.
